How do you get a website youve created to appear when searched on search engines such as Yahoo, Google?

I have just made a new website and no one is visiting it because no matter what you search on Yahoo or Google etc., its not coming up as a choice. Is there a way you know of to get a website to be listed on search engines? Thanks!

The order of websites based on how many links there are to become more popular so it is nothing to become.
The first website takes time to become more popular so it is nothing to that site they couldnt have linked you couldnt be the first website shown.
